September 2005
It's been what? Nine months since I've written anything? Ten? All I can
say is that I'm sorry, but hopefully you can understand that since
I've written, I've been swamped. It took everything I had to complete True
Believer and
At First Sight so they could be published on schedule. True
Believer was
finished at the end of February and I charged right into At
First Sight.
Still, I had a large U.S. tour for True Believer,
another book tour in England and Ireland, still another book tour in
Japan, and I had to spend a few days in New York for the BEA (Book
Expo America) in May. In addition, I spent five days at Disneyworld
in May and two weeks in California in June. Because I don't have an
assistant, all those trips meant that I had to spend additional time
catching up in the office. Add in the fact that I have five children
and it was summer vacation and. . . whew! This was, without a doubt,
one of the busiest years I've ever spent. I'm glad it's finally done.
So, now that I finished, what's going on? Icky stuff, actually. Well, not
too bad in the grand scheme of thing, but I had to do all the busy stuff
of life that I've been putting off for months. I had to answer all the fan
mail that had arrived in the last nine months, had to get my records in order
for my accountant, I cleaned out my file cabinets, updated the web-site,
and caught up on all the paperwork that I've been putting off. Today, in
fact, I should be just about done, and I can't tell you how good it makes
me feel.
I'm tired, though. As I said, it took everything I had to finish the two
novels, and I'm going to be taking a break for a short while. At least until
my book tour in October. I've got a couple more short trips I have to make
and a ton of interviews to do, but I'm not embarking on a new novel at the
present time. I might, if I had a story, but even though I'm getting closer,
I'm still not ready to begin. Even if I was ready, though, I'd still be taking
a break. All work and no play makes Nick a dull boy. (Sorry, just had to
put that in, with full credit to Stephen King and Stanley Kubrick).
Will I have another novel next year? Honestly, I don't know. If I can come
up with a story in the next couple of months, probably. But I hate deadlines;
they tend to drain me emotionally, and in my next contract, I've left the
matter open. I might have a book, or I might not. Either way, it's my decision.
It's been a tough last five years. How tough? I'll put it in perspective:
From June, 1994 until June, 2000 (6 years), I wrote 4 novels. From June,
2000 to June, 2005, I wrote 6 novels and Three weeks
with my Brother. Not
only that, but in the past five years, I've spent nearly a year on the road,
touring for the books. Instead of having 18 months between novels -- and
if you take into account all the traveling I've had to do -- I've had only
had 5-6 months, which isn't much time when you consider that not only do
I have to write them, but I have to "come up in the ideas" in the
first place, and then tour afterwards.
Speaking of that, I'll be touring for At First Sight, and if I'm in your
area, swing by to say hello. I always love to meet my readers.
Until next time. . .
