The story was originally inspired by Nicholas's wife's grandparents.

The novel tells the story of Noah and Allie. In the first-person narrative sections, it is written from the perspective of Noah, an eighty-year-old man.

A love story, written in both first and third person narrative, in two different time periods, that tells the story of Noah and Allie; how they fell in love in the 1940s, and how they fall in love again in the 1990s, when Allie is suffering from Alzheimer's and no longer remembers him.

A first novel, of approximately 47,000 words.

The story was written in North Carolina.

The story was set in New Bern, North Carolina.

WHEN

The novel was written over a six-month period, from June, 1994 to January, 1995. Sold to publishers in Oct. 1995, it was published in October, 1996 by Warner Books, and spent over two years on best-seller lists in the U.S. and around the world.

The story takes place in 1946 and 1996.
