Week of 18 August 2003

Though I haven't written in a couple of weeks, not a lot has happened. When writing a novel, one day flows to the next; on each day, there are struggles and successes. Hopefully, the latter weighs more heavily than the former.

My schedule is beginning to pick up -- because The Wedding will be coming out in just a couple of weeks, there are countless interviews to sit through. In addition, school is just starting for the older kids, guests are in town, and I still have to finish Three Weeks with my brother. Though I wanted to be finished by now, it didn't happen. I'm close -- relatively close, anyway. I'm now working through my impressions of the places we visited.

This book had a number of difficult structural issues; there are essentially two separate stories that have to be blended seamlessly. One concerns the events in the lives of my brother and I; the second story concerns the trip. Each story has different "natural" breaks; it's been a challenge getting them to flow just right. But I think I've got it -- now, I'm just writing, and hopefully, I'll be done by the end of the month. My tour starts on Sept. 9th, so I have a couple of extra days if I need it.
